benefits of soy

June 24, 2007 |

Soy was always believed to be a healthy food and a preventive food for cancer. Traditional soy products such as tofu, tempeh and soymilk are high in protein. Other legumes, nuts and fish are also healthy sources of protein. It is best not to rely solely on soy foods for protein.

The list of benefits of soy are many. Several recent scientific studies have shown that a regular intake of traditional soy foods may help to prevent breast cancer, prostate and colon cancer. It also helps to prevent heart disease by reducing cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood pressure and preventing plaque buildup in the arteries.

It may also help to prevent osteoporosis as there are several studies that suggested that isoflavones in soy products may be a factor in helping to prevent bone loss. There is scientific evidence that soy may also help to prevent or alleviate menopausal symptoms. A friend of mine who studies plastic surgery shares her simple soy drink recipe with me: Add 4 tablespoons of soy milk powder to 1 pint of water. Sweeten with either raw sugar, honey or molasses and add a pinch of vegetable salt. For flavor, she adds any kind of fruit, apple or cherry concentrate, carob powder, dates or bananas.
