Holistic Treatment and Natural Health Remedies for Allergies and Asthma

Lately, I have been searching holistic treatment for allergies and asthma. It was only in the recent years that I found out that they are related to each other.

After speaking to several Chinese doctors and naturopaths, I understand that a weak immune system may be the underlying cause of allergies and asthma. Medical experts agree that a lowered or improperly functioning immune system can and does result in several diseases such as asthma, allergies, arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome and cancer to name just a few.

Antigens are large protein molecules of bacteria, viruses, chemicals and other substances that appear harmful from entering your body and our body’s immune systems form a barrier and work as the first line of defense against these diseases. The barriers include your skin, mucus, cough reflex, stomach acid and even enzymes in your tears, which destroy toxins. If the antigen or toxin manages to get past these barriers, then the immune system launches a second line of defense, found in your blood. They are white blood cells, which perform a protective function by seeking out and destroying foreign protein antigens.

If you suffer from a weak immune system it is important to avoid things that suppress or destroy it, such as a high cholesterol diet, heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium), fat, alcohol, fried foods, food additives, obesity, industrial pollutants, pesticides, herbicides, stress, prescription drugs, too much sunlight, tobacco, and radiation.

Unfortunately, there is no “magic cure” that you can take to quickly repair your immune system, but there are several natural remedies adn holistic ways to help build and support it by providing your body with proper nutrition, regular exercise, adequate rest, relaxation and maintaining a positive mental attitude.

A holistic treatment to protect and strengthen the immune system would require you to follow these steps:

1. Limit saturated and trans fats, food additives and alcohol
2. Take a good quality multi-vitamin/mineral supplement daily
3. Ensure your diet includes adequate protein
4. Take 1000 mg of Vitamin C daily.
5. Eat 3 to 4 servings of vegetables daily.
6. Eat 3 to 4 servings of legumes weekly.
7. Eat 3 to 4 servings of omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods weekly
8. Avoid late nights and get adequate sleep

Any holistic treatment or natural health remedies you embark on is never an overnight process. The time to heal differs from one to another. It can take three months to two years. Children tend to heal much more quickly than adults or the elderly. People with allergies and asthma will find that their asthma and allergy symptoms become less frequent and less severe when their immune systems become stronger.

I once was told by a friend in the cell towers business that allergies can be inherited. They can run in the family. Also, if  a mother does not have enough nutrition from fresh foods available to her during pregnancy, or if she is stressed and does not eat healthy food during pregnancy, the baby may be more susceptible to allergies.

Stress has been proven to be a  major cause of allergies. This is the reason I believe, that alot of people begin getting allergies in their late 20′s and early 30′s. Stress weakens a person’s immune system, and causes over reaction to allergens. So perhaps one of the more important natural health remedies would be to get more sleep and rest.

my search for allergy relief

I’m one of those not so fortunate ones who is often on the lookout for allergy relief and allergy medications. This also led to my search for allergy treatment ever since I found out that I have skin allergies and allergic rhinitis.

It wasn’t easy to accept that I needed allergy medications at one time when my allergic rhinitis was driving me crazy. I didn’t like what my doctor said about my allergy condition and I refused to go on long term allergy medications. Since I continue my research for allergy relief which includes daily maintenance of fresh fruits and vegetables, adopting alternative therapies, avoiding dusty and smoky environments, investing in good air filters for the home and my search for dehumidifiers too. I did alot in my search for allergy relief. I didn’t want to go on anti histamines on long term.

Allergy sufferers need to focus on building the immunity and a combination so vitamins and supplements can aid on that. My daily musts for my allergy relief include 1000mg of Vitamin C, bifidus, oregano oil and flaxseed oil.

For your allergy relief, look into anti-dust mite pillows and even a vacuum cleaner that can wipe these allergens out.
